Lumi-Plugin and iMist partner to develop innovative fire suppression solution

Lumi-Plugin – the innovative downlight designed to discreetly hold multiple plugins, including essential fire safety systems – is partnering with iMist, one of the UK’s foremost suppliers of high-pressure water mist fire suppression systems to create a new plugin; one that uses less water to supress a fire, takes less time to install and removes unsightly clutter from the ceiling.

A live fire test was recently conducted at the Fire Protection Association’s Annex C laboratory in Gloucestershire recently to put this new joint venture through its paces.

A Lumi-Plugin LED downlight was installed with an iMist nozzle, mounted on the company’s standard stainless steel flexible hose and fixed above a plasterboard ceiling. A fire fuel load was then ignited beneath the nozzle, with the heat causing the bulb in the nozzle to burst and activating the iMist high-pressure water mist system. For 30 minutes, fine water mist particles were discharged at high pressure while the fire was adjusted to a variety of heights and positions and the temperatures in the test cell were measured by thermocouples.

A safe and successful result was reported. The test demonstrated that at no point were any of the Annex C temperature limits breached and the fire was successfully suppressed. It also showed that that the Lumi-Plugin light adapter was operating correctly before, during and after the live fire test was conducted and sustained no visible damage during the test.

Alex Pollard, operations director of iMist, commented: “At a time when fire safety is a major concern both within the housing sector and the public at large, it’s vital that forward-thinking companies like Lumi-Plugin and iMist come together and combine their technology to offer new fire safety solutions. This is a ground-breaking test which we believe is the first time that a high-pressure water mist system has been successfully incorporated into a downlight. This Lumi-Plugin option combines the water and cost-saving benefits of our fire suppression system in an ingenious application; it is easy and fast to install – and doesn’t spoil the look of a room.”

Ben Bishop, operations director of Lumi-Plugin explained: “Over the last 6 years, our revolutionary products have become known for their fire safety and energy-saving innovation while uncluttering ceilings and creating streamlined interiors. As part of our ongoing R&D programme, we are continuing to develop additional safety features. We are pleased to be partnering with iMist to offer our customers this latest plugin – it is an important part of our mission to enable them to create safer and smarter properties.”

Q&A with Lumi-Plugin’s New Team Member – Greg Speed

Q: Welcome to the Lumi-Plugin team! Can you tell us a little bit about you and your background?

A: My name is Greg Speed, I’m 25 and originally from Watford where I started off my working life as an apprentice engineer in the fire safety world at the Building Research Establishment where I managed to do a fair amount of travelling to countries such as India and Germany fairly frequently. I learnt many great things about the working world especially when I was sent out to India to complete fire testing in the middle of nowhere with a whole village population of around 200, watching you trying to extinguish fires. I developed a lot at BRE and then eventually moved into sales and the wholesale industry selling the products which I had worked with as an apprentice. It is fair to say I don’t mind trying things and being “adventurous” whatever that means.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: My real passion is Motorcycle racing and particularly anything that involves an engine. I currently compete in off-road classic motocross where I won the British championship for the first-time last year in 2019. I love sports such as cycling and running and do as much as I can however, I am a sucker for good music, movies and food/beer.

Q: Favourite food?

A: This is a real difficult one for me as I am a lover of all kinds of food but if I had to narrow it down to one, it would have to be between either Spanish food such as Tapas and Paella as I spent a lot of time around Madrid where you can sit, eat and drink all day long. The other cuisine I love is Thai food, with a number of favourite dishes that I like.

Q: Where’s your favourite place in the world?

A: My favourite place I have been would have to be France and more specifically the coast off south of France, however nothing would beat having my own transport and travelling around Europe.

Q: What are you looking forward to doing at Lumi-Plugin?

A: I am looking forward to being at the forefront of the business, showcasing what a great product Lumi-Plugin really is and seeing how much it will help different people in different ways. I am excited about helping the Lumi-Plugin range on its journey as it is fair to say there is nothing else really like it.

Lumi-Plugin Win ‘Most Innovative in Lighting Solutions’ Award

The team at Lumi-Plugin team are excited to announce that they have won the Build Magazine’s award for Most Innovative in Lighting Solutions.

BUILD magazine published its first issue in 2015 but is still considered to be a relatively new face in the construction industry. Despite its youth, the publication provides a fresh look at the sector as the only globally focused free-to-subscribe construction magazine.

Their awards have been set up to show gratitude to the innovative businesses across various sectors in the UK that are providing ground breaking services, products and safe homes and work environments for everyone.

Lumi-Plugin was nominated via an online form to be apart of the awards, once the nominees are collected BUILD magazines publishers, AI Global Media, put forward their choice of nominees for consideration.

Bob Ward, Managing Director of Lumi-Plugin, said:

“We are delighted to have been chosen as the winners for ‘Most Innovative in Lighting Solutions’ award. 2019 has been an exciting year for our team thus far and this award showcases our continuous efforts to ensure that fire safety is not only aesthetically better for ceilings but also gives occupants peace of mind and allows them to ‘sleep safe’.”

Lumi-Plugin is a great product that incorporates low voltage lighting with either fire suppression, smoke and heat alarms and/or 3 hours emergency lighting in a stylish luminaire that will help streamline ceiling spaces. These luminaires can also host PIR sensors or air extraction. The multi-functional design reduces the installation costs as only one system needs to be installed rather than various systems in multiple places. Further savings will be made as the low voltage LEDs and PIR sensor plugins will ensure energy savings and running costs.

Our downlights can be installed with an emergency light option therefore staircase and corridors can be illuminated in an emergency and the sprinkler system options will protect occupants from the ravages of fire, additionally, our 3-hour battery back-up means in the event of main power being lost, the fire alarms will still protect your home and its occupants. The compact and simplistic design of Lumi-Plugin allows it to seamlessly blend in with its surroundings without disrupting the interior of your home or property.

Q&A with Lumi-Plugin’s New Team Member – Tom Martin

Lumi-Plugin are excited to welcome their latest team member, Tom Martin, to the team. We asked Tom some questions in order for our clients and followers to get to know him a bit better.

Q: Welcome to the Lumi-Plugin team! Can you tell us a little bit about you and your background?

A: My name is Tom Martin, I’m an outgoing 27-year-old who – when I’m not working – loves to get out of the country and travel as much as possible. I spent just over 2 years living and working in Australia where I went all around the country as well as hopping across and traveling the likes of South East Asia, New Zealand and Fiji before returning home and “settling down”. I’d say that I am very active and sporty, having played rugby for Newbury Rugby Club since the age of 6 and competing in the 1st team – along with other sporting interests! I have a longstanding back-ground within sales and developing deep client relationships – with a large part of my career being Recruitment focused.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: I play rugby and I’m a keen gym goer, so I guess Fitness & Sport are very important to me – however anyone who knows me will know I have an equal/greater love for a beer and socialising.

Q: Favourite food?

A: A huge toss-up between Asian or Mexican Cuisine! If I had to narrow it down to a single dish from each – either the traditional Indonesian dish of a Nasi Goreng or Fajitas…

Q: Where’s your favourite place in the world?

A: Hmm let’s split this up. To live it would have to be Melbourne. To holiday – Bali, Indonesia without a doubt!

Q: What are you looking forward to doing at Lumi-Plugin?

A: Watching my efforts contribute to the overall success of the company, which will then hopefully lead to an early retirement somewhere on the beach!

Tom’s new role at Lumi-Plugin is Business Development Manager, with a key focus to form and nurture new business relationships and drive the business’ success forward. Where the business is taking off, he will manage and build the brand awareness by maintaining the sales cycle with the aim that no professional within the industry is unaware of what Lumi-Plugin is and the benefits it has to offer!
